Summary

A yuri romance for the modern career woman!

Uno Hinako throws herself into makeup, fashion, and falling in love, hoping that will make her seem "normal" to the other people at her job。 But no matter how hard she tries, she's a self-doubting mess inside, and her attempts at "normal" romance with men just keep failing。 When she starts to think she might be alone forever, a new normal presents itself—in the form of her relationship with Asahi Sato, a level-headed woman who works at her company, which starts as respect until it becomes far more intimate。

I've found it。 My new favorite love story。 Not only do I heavily relate to the main character Hinako, but the story itself is highly inspiring。 No matter your age it's never too late to aim for the stars and explore the galaxy。 I am in love with the story, the paste of time, the side characters, and the "love" interest。 I am looking forward to buying the English copy of the next volume on release next month! Please support this series! Much more melancholy than I had anticipated, but still lovely with realistically flawed characters struggling with relatable issues。 I look forward to seeing how these characters develop。

a really refreshing yuri that focuses on adult women and a slooooooow burn relationship。 I love the depiction of Uno's struggle with her identity and femininity, and feel like this could touch on deeper sapphic struggles than most yuris do。 very excited for the next volume and for what is hopefully a trend of more realistic, less trope-y yuri with adult women as the main characters。 a really refreshing yuri that focuses on adult women and a slooooooow burn relationship。 I love the depiction of Uno's struggle with her identity and femininity, and feel like this could touch on deeper sapphic struggles than most yuris do。 very excited for the next volume and for what is hopefully a trend of more realistic, less trope-y yuri with adult women as the main characters。 。。。more

Very sweet and cute。 If you want a good GL story without a very intense plot, this is the perfect book。

。。。more

Such a good start to this series! It has got me caving donuts and relaxing summer nights! Our main character, Uno, is trying to be something she isn’t to please the people around her and when she faces falling in love she can’t picture it。 Until she starts getting to know Satou Asahi。This is such a good WLW series and I will most definitely be picking up the next volume。

SO WHOLESOME!!! This is the yuri romance I have been craving! Gentle, slow, and sweet, Uno and Satou are working women who are trying to figure out what they want from life, and themselves。 I love the focus on Uno’s internal battle to change and to become the person she wants to be。 With Satou around, she feels a little stronger every time。 Great character development and so, so cute!!!!

'Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon' is the first in the sample of contemporary yuri manga titles I've decided to read, and it is absolutely beautiful and wholesome。 Especially considering that the main characters are adults。 Ordinary, working class adults。One of the women, Uno Hinako, has been trying hard to fit into society's traditional feminine woman role her whole life。 It's the reason for why she's working for a fashion and make-up magazine, and for why she cares so much about her appearance。 'Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon' is the first in the sample of contemporary yuri manga titles I've decided to read, and it is absolutely beautiful and wholesome。 Especially considering that the main characters are adults。 Ordinary, working class adults。One of the women, Uno Hinako, has been trying hard to fit into society's traditional feminine woman role her whole life。 It's the reason for why she's working for a fashion and make-up magazine, and for why she cares so much about her appearance。 She is expected to fall in love, get married and have kids already。But it's not happening。 She's never fallen in love with any man, and so she thinks she's wrong and broken。 Defective in some way。 That she's not normal。 That's what limited, boxed gender roles and conservatism straight out of the fifties does to you。Uno is depressed - society's expectations of her have forced her into her own worst enemy, have made her hate herself and not systematic prejudice at large。 She is unmotivated, insecure, has low self-esteem, and is terrified of being alone (keeping up appearances means clinging to work friends she doesn't really like)。But she finds she is happy when she gets to know and hang out with Asahi Sato, a cool and sombre woman who also works at her fashion company。 Asahi is also unmarried, and five years older than Uno, and she doesn't seem to care what other people think of her。 Uno is in awe of this serious and hardworking social outcast。They bond over lunches; lunches that include food in bento boxes。 But specifically, they bond over doughnuts。 Cat-decorated doughnuts with holes in the middle。 It is the sweet food, with or without holes in them, eaten under any stage of the moon, that makes these women feel whole and happy。 They need to be careful about their money, but their concern for each other makes them buy food for one another。 Uno even starts visiting Asahi's home, and cooking, with Asahi's younger sister eagerly eyeing them。More than the doughnuts, Uno and Asahi make each other whole。Bottom line, 'Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon' is a career woman's yuri manga that's so sweet and touching and enlightening that it almost aches。 I'll be honest, I wanted to pick it up mostly because of the title - sweet foods from a bakery and crescent moons are among my favourite things in the universe! And cats! With the LBGTQ content or not, Uno's depression, her fear of disappointing her conservative family and friends, and of being alone in an unforgiving and outdated culture full of stigma - it is harrowing and relatable。 Asahi, too, is three-dimensional (it's implied that her parents are deceased and she has to support herself and her sister all on her own) and kind of adorable。 Workplace sexual harassment is another issue that's touched upon in a serious light。But there is hope on the horizon, however, that's like milky way starlight and sugar, mixing into the night sky like cookie dough。 In a doughnut-shaped galaxy, where pretty crescent moons are common sights when stargazing。 The couple don't kiss yet in the first volume, but it'll get there。Here is a new manga (2020!) that I strongly recommended to anyone。 Start the progress, and keep the conversation going。Final Score: 5/5 。。。more

I love everything about this volume。 So wholesome。 Such a warm and sweet message is being conveyed。 Uno Hinako opens the story unhappily。 She works so hard to be normal; to do the things her friends, family, and society tells her will make her happy。 All this does is make her miserable。 Enter her coworker, Satou Asahi。 She is quietly self-assured and a bit of a loner, but Uno finds out after a chance meeting one particularly difficult night that she is also kind and has the same self doubts as U I love everything about this volume。 So wholesome。 Such a warm and sweet message is being conveyed。 Uno Hinako opens the story unhappily。 She works so hard to be normal; to do the things her friends, family, and society tells her will make her happy。 All this does is make her miserable。 Enter her coworker, Satou Asahi。 She is quietly self-assured and a bit of a loner, but Uno finds out after a chance meeting one particularly difficult night that she is also kind and has the same self doubts as Uno! As the volume unfolds, Uno finds herself growing more comfortable with herself as she grows closer to Satou and finds acceptance beside her new friend。 Being the first volume of a yuri romance we know where this is going, it's just not there yet。 So far it's just a nice story about two friends getting acquainted while introducing the themes of the story, mainly themes of self-acceptance。 There are hints that these feelings of friendship are already blossoming into something more than that (particularly on Satou's side through her wingman sister, Subaru, who I just adore), but Shio Usui is taking her time with all that。 I am fine with it, I think the pacing is fantastic。 Also the art is fantastic。 I was grinning the biggest, silliest grin the whole time I read this volume。 I am already looking forward to the next one! If you're on the fence, just read this because it is a fantastic series debut。 。。。more

I can't express how much I love this first volume! I like both the characters。 Dealing with self-loathing and questioning what you want was a relatable theme。 Their budding relationship building off of self-improvement really warmed my heart。 Being comfortable with yourself can be a challenge and isn't always easy to come to terms with but I love how their slowburn is mirrors that。 I love the supportive sister。 Just a great read I recommend。 Looking forward to the next! This was a cute first volume。 I appreciated the emphasis on conforming to gender roles in order to enter a relationship with someone as well as how being in a heterosexual relationship will magically make you "happy" and "complete"。 This is absolute bullshit for a number of reasons, but I liked how this mentality is so damaging to adults, especially ones struggling to figure out who they are and what they want。That being said, I didn't really connect with the characters and felt that the story w This was a cute first volume。 I appreciated the emphasis on conforming to gender roles in order to enter a relationship with someone as well as how being in a heterosexual relationship will magically make you "happy" and "complete"。 This is absolute bullshit for a number of reasons, but I liked how this mentality is so damaging to adults, especially ones struggling to figure out who they are and what they want。That being said, I didn't really connect with the characters and felt that the story was too slowly paced for the payoff towards the end (if that makes sense)。 Not only that, but I felt some of the scenes went on a little too long and the dialogue/ inner monologue got a bit repetitive。 The artwork/ art style were really cute, though, and I loved how expressive Uno and Subaru are。Overall, this was a nice, sweet first volume。 I don't think I'm going to continue with it, but I do recommend it for anyone looking for a cute adult yuri manga。 。。。more

'Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon' is a love story between two working adults, so I picked it up on that basis alone, and happily found even more to enjoy as I read it。 Uno has been attempting (and failing at) compulsory heterosexuality when a chance meeting with Satou, her cool and aloof senpai at work, makes her feel that maybe she should take a chance on living for herself。 I so empathize with Satou's "You don't have to perform for other people" attitude, and her being several years older feel 'Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon' is a love story between two working adults, so I picked it up on that basis alone, and happily found even more to enjoy as I read it。 Uno has been attempting (and failing at) compulsory heterosexuality when a chance meeting with Satou, her cool and aloof senpai at work, makes her feel that maybe she should take a chance on living for herself。 I so empathize with Satou's "You don't have to perform for other people" attitude, and her being several years older feels right, like she's learned this through lived experience -- I can also really feel for Uno's desire to be the person others expect her to be, and how that can trap you into hating yourself; the two of them together is just so great。 I also really appreciate Satou's younger sister, who sees just how much Satou cares about Uno and is willing to push the two of them together when they're moving too slow。 Anyway, this is a great comforting start to their love story, and I'm really looking forward to the next volume。 。。。more

I REALLY like this! Off to a great start!Hinako has serious self-esteem issues。 But towards the end of the volume, when she is conversing with her true inner self, she finally realizes that the reason she's so unhappy is because all of the "standards" of "being normal" she's been striving for, is actually just her trying to force herself into an undesirable mold to please others, like family & friends。 She's starting to change, though! I think the promise and joy of love is in the air, along with that beautiful moon。 Here's hoping these two wonderful women find happiness together。 I eagerly await the next volume。 On a side note, the Mangaka of this series has a VERY similar style to the Mangaka of "A Tropical Fish Yearns For Snow"。 In art, in story, and in emotion。 Both are filled with themes of isolation and loneliness。 Both have a goofy girl with long light hair and a serious girl with short black hair。 I'm almost completely convinced that this series is created under a pseudonym。 I'm almost certain the same Mangaka is behind both series。 Either way, this story is wonder so far。 It's been enjoyable seeing Hinako and Asahi getting to know each other。 I think we've got a match made in Heaven。 。。。more

Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon is a yuri manga series: A。 About adults,B。 Where no one is cheating, C。 No looks like they are trapped in porn film on the cover,D。 No one dies,E。 And is a really sweet story with likeable characters。

Uno is your average young working woman, on the outside anyway。 Inside, she’s utterly adrift and trying hard to make herself feel normal and have “normal” romances while choking down her own self-loathing。 A chance encounter with her serious co-worker, Asahi, shows Uno that she might just be okay as she is and that maybe normal isn’t something you really need to strive for。。。Okay, I’m going out of order to do the bad stuff first, sorry。 First, I hate this doughnut metaphor so hard。 I get what th Uno is your average young working woman, on the outside anyway。 Inside, she’s utterly adrift and trying hard to make herself feel normal and have “normal” romances while choking down her own self-loathing。 A chance encounter with her serious co-worker, Asahi, shows Uno that she might just be okay as she is and that maybe normal isn’t something you really need to strive for。。。Okay, I’m going out of order to do the bad stuff first, sorry。 First, I hate this doughnut metaphor so hard。 I get what the point is - it couldn’t be more obvious if it tried - but nobody has ever said that the hole is what makes the doughnut。 I refuse to believe it and wholly reject this reality。 At least they salvage the doughnuts themselves later with cat versions。Second, Uno is a lot to spend time with at first。 Until things start to change, boy, the poor woman’s a total wreck。 I think the book does a superlative job selling how hellishly adrift she feels and the portrayal of her hatred of herself is quite good。 Just, yeah, it’s laid on very thick at the beginning。 It undoubtedly reflects the pressure she’s under, given that she’s armouring up every morning, and helps show the contrast in her life later, but I’m not going to pretend it isn’t a downer。But then, fateful doughnut meeting occurs while Uno is at her lowest (this scene is a real belter, even if it is sad as heck) and this book really starts to change。 There’s an obvious and wonderful chemistry between our two leads from the start that only gets better as they open up to one another。 Prepare for the most adorable rolled eggs ever。We also get some wonderful characters added into the mix - Uno’s friends are so incredibly well-meaning yet intently focused on what society expects to such an extent that I won’t be shocked if they take a more antagonistic role later on。 There’s also Asahi’s sister Subaru, who is one of the most adorable brats I’ve ever seen - she practically threatens to steal this book from Uno and Asahi。The art is quite good - especially with regards to facial expressions。 You can feel how depressed Uno is on literally the first page; it’s very palpable how unhappy she is。 Subaru and Asahi actually LOOK like sisters - they’re not carbon copies but they might be the most believable sibling designs in any manga I’ve read。Uno is miserable and lashes out now and then and has terrible coping mechanisms。 Yet she soon realizes she wants to change to be something better。 Asahi is the collected and sensible work sempai, but she definitely has her goofier, teasingly mean side, and is either letting herself relax (OR has no chill) around Uno。 They’re definitely more than they initially appear to be, which is what a good character should read like。This book’s worth reading just to watch these two slowly coming together。 It might take a bit, but as long as they’re making steps forward a little at a time it’s infinitely more interesting than some other yuri I could name。 We’re also clearly on a collision course with the reality of Japanese same-sex relationships, which I always appreciate being addressed。4 stars, buoyed by the chemistry developing between our leads and the mere existence of Subaru。 While I struggle with a doughnut philosophy that outright rejects the existence of filled doughnuts (Boston cream for life!), this is a very excellent start to what I hope will continue to be a lovely series。 。。。more

AHHHHHHH MORE COMICS LIKE THIS PLEASEYuri manga is often a bit divorced from reality, but the experiences of Hinako in this volume really reflect the experiences of a lesbian who grew up in a stiflingly heteronormative society。 It really lives up to its tag line, "この社会に生きづらさを感じる、すべての人に送るエール。" Definitely a good comic for young adults in the workplace struggling with adjusting to life as an adult, too, IMO。 AHHHHHHH MORE COMICS LIKE THIS PLEASEYuri manga is often a bit divorced from reality, but the experiences of Hinako in this volume really reflect the experiences of a lesbian who grew up in a stiflingly heteronormative society。 It really lives up to its tag line, "この社会に生きづらさを感じる、すべての人に送るエール。" Definitely a good comic for young adults in the workplace struggling with adjusting to life as an adult, too, IMO。 。。。more

WHAT THE FREAKING HECK THIS IS SO CUTE!! Not only is it cute and wholesome, but it also talks about very real issues that women deal with。 The art is so so stunning, like I wanna put some of the panels on my wall cause they’re so pretty。 And both of the characters are adults with their own struggles and I just think this is absolutely amazing!

I v just finished the first volume and I like the project very much so far! Those two are very cute, the story is distinctive and very important because it is important to see that every human being have a difficulty being themselves in nowadays society。 I d like to thank the authors of creating something this sincere and beautiful and I cannot see how the story develops further!
